Facts & Figures
Düsseldorf Airport is the third largest airport in Germany with approx. 155,000 aircraft movements and 2 million passengers (2024). Due to its location close to the city, residents in this densely populated area suffer greatly from aircraft noise, especially at night.
Noise Pollution and the Community
The airport intends to expand its flight rights from the current maximum of 45 flights to 60 flights per hour in the future. About 40,000 objections were lodged against this.
Citizens’ Influence
For more than 10 years, the activist-group “Kaarster gegen Fluglärm” (people from the city of Kaarst against aviation noise”) has been fighting against the expansion of the airport’s capacity and has so far been able to prevent a decision. In addition, we demand a repeal of the flexible night flight regulations. These regularly lead to nightly landings outside regular operating hours.
Governments’ Position
The municipalities also reject the expansion of the airport. The state government is delaying a decision but has on the other side so far refused to tighten the night flight regulations.
Expected developments
In view of the growth of the airport, night-time aircraft noise in particular will increase in the coming years. At the same time, the pressure to make a decision on the airport’s application is increasing.
