The local municipalities of Markopoulos Mesogia, Spatos Artemida together with residents of the surrounding areas and members of the Pan-Hellenic Association “Environmental Harmony” took the Civil Aviation Authority (APA), the Ministry of Environment and Transport to court and won. The Courts confirmed that the air noise is a real environmental issue that affects the quality […]

New report shows people get annoyed at lower levels of aircraft noise

A major new report from the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), published 10th June 2026, has found that people get annoyed at much lower noise levels than previously thought. It backs up what residents have been saying for years. For example, a previous CAA report called SoNA published 10 years ago  found that 10% of […]

Research finds ultra-fine particles a real concern around airports

For years, air pollution around airports has largely been discussed in familiar terms such as carbon emissions, aircraft noise and visible exhaust. But scientists are increasingly focusing on something passengers and nearby residents cannot see at all. They are called ultrafine particles, or UFPs. They are thousands of times smaller than the width of a human hair. And according […]

The Netherlands wins with a smaller Schiphol – a new perspective on aviation, quality of life and prosperity

For decades, the same refrain has been heard in the Netherlands: Schiphol must remain large, otherwise our economy will collapse. It’s a message repeated so often that it’s almost become self-evident. But this narrative has never been tested against the facts. Fewer flights would cost jobs, drive away businesses, and undermine our international position. But […]

No third runway at Vienna Airport!

In Vienna, the board of Flughafen AG announced that it would not be pursuing the third runway project, and three days later, the airport celebrated its 20th anniversary. This seems strange because the announcement of plans to build a third runway at the end of the 1990s was the trigger for the mediation process. This […]

Aviation growth doesn’t always benefit the economy

This is a very well-researched report, just published, shows that in only a minority (37%) of European regions does air connectivity growth drive economic growth. These regions are mainly found in Eastern Europe and tourist *receiving* areas.   The authors write: Yes, air connectivity and GDP per capita are correlated. But causation, direction and location […]

Demo against expansion of Roissy Airport

On 10th October citizens demonstrated against plans to expand Paris’s Roissy Airport. The project anticipates a 19% increase in traffic by 2050, equating to 344 additional flights per day. The citizens argued that the consultation, which should have been to about hearing people’s views, was primarily been used to promote the project.

Sleepless Nights – Aviation, local impacts & climate injustice

Stay Grounded did a webinar on Night flights. They are a nightmare for those living close to airports, disrupting sleep and contributing to severe health risks. But the impacts of night flights extend far beyond the local community: they are also powerful climate bombs. In this webinar, we aim at bridging the gap between the […]
